Oracle Database Assessment Services

Issues Addressed

Our services are intended to help companies that are facing the following issues.

1.Upcoming Database Replacements

We help our clients compare their current database usage and needs with their original usage and needs when they first installed their database servers. As part of this process, we discuss:

- Whether the database servers should be replaced or whether they should continue to be maintained under a renewed contract - How replacement database servers should be configured - What considerations should be taken into account when servers are actually replaced

Based on these discussions, we present possible courses of action to our clients.

2.Uncertainty About Migrating to New Platforms

We help our clients consider migrations from on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) as well as migrations from general-purpose UNIX servers to Intel® Architecture (IA) servers running UNIX or Windows. As part of this process, we discuss:

- Whether the new platform will meet the client’s system requirements (i.e. availability, extensibility, performance, and cost) - How the client’s systems will be structured when the actual migration occurs - What other considerations should be taken into account

Based on these discussions, we present possible courses of action and proposed migration procedures to our clients.

3.Resolution to Use Database Features Effectively

We talk with our clients about their problems, requirements, and an overview of their current setup when their database systems

- have grown complicated - have become expensive to run - have been exhibiting poor performance for which a clear solution is elusive

Based on these discussions, we present possible courses of action to our clients.

4.Directionless Database System Vision

We talk with system owners, administrators, and users to determine whether they should replace, expand, consolidate, or maintain their current database systems.

Service Catalog

We provide the following four database assessment services to meet our clients’ needs.

Whiteboard Sessions

Overview

We conduct interviews and discussions with our clients to determine their database system requirements as well as the problems they are currently facing. We then help our clients choose a course of action while investigating possible hardware and middleware solutions.

Typical clients

We work with companies that are weighing the pros and cons of expanding or replacing their current systems—or migrating to Intel® Architecture (IA) servers—and want to use Oracle database features more effectively (improve availability and extensibility).

Typical consulting engagement

We run two days of whiteboard sessions:
- On day one, we conduct interviews to assess the current state of the client’s systems along with the systems’ requirements and problems associated with them. - On day two, we conduct discussions to choose a course of action. We also offer an operational assessment service for databases, which allows us to have more impactful discussions based on actual performance and sizing metrics.

We ask our clients to fill out an interview sheet and prepare materials related to their systems, such as outlines and schematic diagrams, before the actual interviews.

Deliverables

We provide proposed improvements, recommended structural proposals, meeting minutes, and other information from the two days of whiteboard sessions. (This varies based on what is actually discussed.)

Operational Assessment Service for Databases

Overview

We first examine the operational status of our client’s database system to produce an assessment report, and then we analyze the database servers’ resource utilization and performance.

Typical clients

We work with companies that are dissatisfied with their database server performance, companies that are considering a migration to new database servers, and companies that are experiencing unstable database behavior and are considering an increase in database server resources.

Typical consulting engagement

We split our operational assessment into three steps:
1. Conduct interviews to assess the current state of the client's systems along with the systems’ requirements and problems associated with them 2. Gather information on the database servers (e.g. which operating systems are used and whether Oracle Database or Microsoft SQL Server is used) over the course of 2–4 weeks 3. Present the results of our assessment and analysis as well as discuss future actions We can also create a rough plan for hardware and ODB configurations based on the results of analyzing database resource usage.

We ask our clients to fill out an interview sheet and prepare materials related to their systems, such as outlines and schematic diagrams, before the actual interviews.

Deliverables

We produce an assessment report with our findings.

Assessment Service for Database Migrations

Overview

We help our clients choose an appropriate platform to which they can migrate their database systems.

Typical clients

We work with companies that are in the process of considering a database server migration and choosing a database server platform as well as companies that want to conduct a technical investigation into the compatibility of vertically-integrated systems, IA servers, and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud platforms.

Supported databases

We can provide this service for Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server.

Typical consulting engagement

We split our assessment into three steps:

1. Conduct interviews to assess the current state of the client’s systems, the client’s requirements, the problems the client faces, possible migration platforms, and other client requests
2. Conduct discussions to determine whether platforms are compatible with the client’s requirements, including
  • System requirements (availability, extensibility, performance, and cost)
  • Data migration requirements (downtime, migration structure, technical risks, and cost)
  • Requirements related to how other systems and applications will be affected
3. Report on assessment results and discuss future actions

Deliverables

We produce an assessment report with our findings.

Assessment Service for Database Migration Procedures

Overview

We help our clients conduct a technical investigation into migration procedures for database systems, with the goal of eliminating our clients’ concerns related to effects on other applications and migrating data quickly.

Typical clients

We work with companies that are in the process of considering a database server migration, exploring new database structures, and figuring out how to migrate data.

Supported databases

We can provide this service for Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server.

Typical consulting engagement

1. Conduct interviews to assess the current state of the client’s systems, the client’s requirements, the problems the client faces, an overview of the database migration, the criteria for a successful migration, and other client requests
2. Conduct discussions related to database server migration procedures, including
  • Database server product requirements (e.g. sizing, version upgrades, patches, and additional features)
  • Data migration requirements (business downtime, database downtime, technical risks, and costs)
  • Requirements related to how other systems and applications will be affected
3. Report on assessment results and discuss future actions

Deliverables

We produce an assessment report with our findings.
